Universal music group is a global music corporation, with offices in more than 60 territories, UMG is the world leader in music-based entertainment. It is part of the 'Big Three' record labels, along with Sony music and Warner Music Group, and their corporate headquarters are located in Hilversum, Netherlands, its operational headquarters located in Santa Monica, California, USA.
The company's origins go back to the formation of the American branch of Decca Records in September 1934. The music corporation of America merged with American Decca in 1962, which led to a Japanese conglomerate 'Matsushita Electric' buying MCA in November 1990. On December 1996, this company was renamed as Universal Studios, and Universal Music Group.
UMG own several influential Labels and brands, for example Abbey Road Studios, Capitol music group and EMI. These record labels have well known artists who have recorded hit songs in their studios. For example, Michael Jackson, The Killers, Sam Smith etc.
In 2008, Universal Music Group agreed to make its catalogue available to Spotify, which was a new streaming service at time, for use outside the U.S. on a limited basis.
