Analysis of Selena Gomez' music videos

'Back To You'-

At the start of the music video, the camera zooms in on Selena at a party who appears uninterested and bored due to her body language and the way that the camera zooms in on her, making her

look out of place. At the end of the video it

shows the same scene, having a cyclical

structure. During the beginning scenes, the lighting changes slowly, as though time is moving slowly (which emphasises Selena's boredom). In my music video i would like to use similar lighting and create a cyclical structure to reflect my characters feelings.

When the other main character in the music video is introduced, there are multiple shots of them both in the car at night, with the lights shining on their faces as though to keep the late night ambience.

What is common in Selena's music videos are close ups on her face, she shows a lot of her emotion through her facial expressions. In one scene where it is a sunny day, she shows several emotions in

a mocking way with subtitles, similarly to how sitcoms dramatize their expressions.

In this music video, like her other videos, she has around 3 locations and similarly to 'Bad Liar', she is dressed in clothes from other periods of time.

I would like to create a scene similar to this, where in the music video the audience watches a memory be created, seeing a character record the other and then seeing the video from their point of view.

'Wolves'-

In this music video there is similar lighting in 'Back To You', also taking place in minimal locations. The lighting used ranges from red to blue and the scenes take place in the same building but in different rooms. Similarly to 'Lose You To

Love Me', this video has scenes where Selena has her back against a wall and is saying the lyrics. Furthermore, the video ends showing the pool, which was the same as the beginning of the video but slightly different, which is like the music video 'Back To You'.

I like this transition between two scenes where half the screen is Selena's face and the other is a wide shot showing Selena's whole body. Moreover, the colours used in this transition are the same as the shot of the pool (in the image above). In my music video when i want to present the protagonist's emotions, i will use this transition in order to make the scene appear more intense (with the colour palette either suiting the rest of the music video or the specific emotion she feels, for example green for envy).

In the music video 'Lose You To Love Me', it opens with a black screen and throughout the video Selena is in the same place, saying the lyrics. The entire video is in black and white and it contains layering of videos of Selena close up. This emphasises her feelings, the layering perhaps symbolising how she has so many things to say that she says it all at once, not being able to control her words due to her emotions of sorrow and/but contentment.

Moreover, in 'The Heart Wants What It Wants' the entire video is in black and white, having close ups of the artist reading the lyrics.

This is also similar to 'Kill Em With Kindness', which has no colour and includes effects like blurring and flashes to create a photoshoot effect.

This has inspired me to use layering of similar shots in my music video as transitions to show my protagonists overwhelming feelings of love. Moreover, i will use flashes as transitions in my music video as i plan to show a character taking videos in a few scenes, like in 'Back to you', so it will create the effect that the audience is seeing one of the characters points of view during the scene through their camera.
